Cumbernauld's housing splits along a different line than most Scottish towns — it's a designated New Town, master-planned in the late 1950s, so the bulk of the stock is 1960s and 1970s: radburn-style deck-access estates across Seafar, Kildrum and Carbrain, mid-rise council blocks, and the distinctive low-rise courtyard layouts that won the New Town its early Saltire awards.
